Genetic screening is an accepted and standard part of obstetric care. It is utilized by prospective parents to reach an informed decision on whether a fetus should be carried to term where it is diagnosed as having a chromosomal abnormality. The screening is not mandatory, and can be refused, though it is routinely offered, particularly where a mother's age, family history or ethnicity heightened the risk of a child being born with a genetic disability. It has the benefit of allowing parents to exercise some degree of control over an area that is inherently unpredictable.
